Off-Grid Undertaker Don Byrne works on a hand-made pine coffin in his outdoor studio on a 32-acre homestead in Bear Creek, N.C. Byrne lives off the grid, with no electricity and running water. In the background is his son, Niko, 4. He builds the coffins with antique hand tools, selling them for about $875 to $1,000 to people who want a simple, ``green'' burial.

Modern technology, we have shunned much of it, but sometimes it’s a great thing to have around, the internet, FaceBook and the such, these things allow us to communicate, to keep in touch with, and to find those we lost track of.

In this case, I reached out on FaceBook, searching for a long lost friend, a person I knew back when I was not even a teenager. I found her and discovered she is living a parallel life to us, living off-grid, but her life is mobile, she is a gypsy at heart.…

Livin’ large by goin’ small

large-small

I am fascinated by the tiny home or tiny house movement, I have lived in fairly small spaces for a number of years, first living in a single wide, 14×70 mobile home, that started me on my journey to living with and in less. PB and I are good at living in tight quarters, we rarely bump into each other, even with the 2 dogs, we get along pretty well.…

Living in a shed? Why not?

Food, water and shelter are 3 of the main requirements to live, today we will talk about shelter, your home. Many of us don’t have the finances to buy a house outright, personally I wouldn’t recommend getting a mortgage for a home, that is major debt. So if you want your own home, what are some other options? One option is to buy a shed or workshop type building and finish it out as a home.…

Homesteading, the good, the bad and the ugly

hs2

Or, what could possibly go wrong?

I found this posted on a homesteading FaceBook page, this is probably one of the most honest assessments of the reality of a young family jumping in with both feet on a homesteading venture that I have seen. When you first start out, you have all these grand ideas about what you are going to do and how to do it, then as time goes by, reality sets in and quite frankly it’s hard, and that’s if nothing goes wrong, and believe me, things go wrong.…

A solar bus home

I have a great love for small homes and portable homes, many of the DIY bus conversion homes are pretty good, but this one is tops in my books, it’s functional, it’s roomy, but it’s not too huge to drive, I could live in this.…

Buying your own land

Buying land, it’s something you will be doing if you want to homestead or go off-grid on your own. Personally I wouldn’t want to “go in” with other people, there are just to many potential issues with sharing property. I also understand that different people have different ideas on how they want to live, either way these videos have some great advice on buying your own land. I enjoy watching what LaMar Alexander has to say about living off-grid and getting your own property. The great thing is LaMar actually LIVES the life, he speaks with authority and from experience.…

Off-Grid guests

Moving to and setting up your off-grid home, it’s most likely in an out of the way, rural, scenic spot, a place that is often seen as a good place to vacation, especially by your family and friends. Usually though, your setup tends to be sparse, spartan, utilitarian, rough, nonstandard, even primitive… and often rather small. More like camping than living, for you that is fine, even desirable, but for your potential guests, it can be daunting, the things you have gotten used to may be foreign to your visitors, but if you are patient, explain things well and consider it fun and unique, your visitors will have a good time and go home with great memories of their vacation.…
