Living inside the box

This absolutely falls under the “How cool is that!” category… I have seen lots of sheds, workshops and homes made out of shipping containers, some are buried in the ground, most just sit on the ground, some people are creative with them and create an entire home out of multiple containers. Most can be found in rural areas of the USA…

This has to the the most interesting one I have seen to date. These folks owned a small (read TINY) lot in NY, after lots of work and convincing, they created their home with several of these containers stacked up, it’s modern looking, it’s sleek, it’s clean and it works!…

Writer Jason Koebler went to visit the Off-Grid Congressman – 87-year-old Roscoe Bartlett — for Politico magazine, and the result is a charming portrait of a very dedicated pubic servant who is spending his final years practising what he preaches.

According to Bartlett, a terrorist with a “$100,000 Scud launcher and any crude nuclear weapon” could detonate a bomb above the atmosphere and knock out America’s power grid for more than a year.…

A tiny house for Macy

This Is What Happens When A Woman Gets Sick Of Divorce And Mortgages. And It’s Brilliant.

Macy Miller is an architect from Idaho that had a BIG dream about a tiny house. She had always wanted a place of her own, but the thought of a mortgage sickened her after she lost her home to foreclosure after getting divorced. So, her dream revolved around building a compact, but beautiful home. For two years, Macy worked on the 196 square-foot home, dedicating her free time to building the small paradise. Finally, construction has finished on her little hideaway… and it’s hard not to be jealous of this place, no matter how small it looks on the outside. After all, it only cost about $11,000.

Macy Miller didn’t have a lot of experience with construction, but she was willing to learn.

Jesse Ventura Daily Mouth-off

Jesse Ventura is launching a daily talkshow on Internet-video.The libertarian rant, to debut next month, will focus, Ventura told Variety, on the hypocrisy of America’s political leaders.

The novelty-politician and former wrestler is a part-time off-grid dweller himself, and an accomplished rabble-rouser. We always enjoy featuring him on the web site and look forward to hearing him sounding off on a range of current events in a show to be titled “Off The Grid.”

Ventura has a difficult time getting his trenchant point of view across in the media (don’t we all). “What we have with Ora.TV is a means to express myself uninhibited. I can say what I feel without censorship.”…

Woody Harrelson plans paper mill

Actor Woody Harrelson is planning to raise money for Prairie Paper Ventures Inc. a private company he started 15 years back.
Prairie Paper makes its paper using a different mix of material from normal: 80% of the inputs come from wheat straw and the rest from recycled fibre. The paper is known as Step Forward Paper. It’s available on Amazon US, and at Staples, Lyreco and Basics.
In a posting on its website, “Out of the Furnace” star Harrelson, who is holding up a box of paper, said “it’s good for the forests, it’s good for the farmers and it’s good for our future.”
The company’s tree-free paper is produced in India – because no ecomill is available in North America and Europe. The ultimate goal is to “build a 100% tree-free, off-the-grid, eco-friendly, chlorine-free mill on the Prairies where millions of tonnes of leftover wheat straw is readily available,” said Christina Marshall, director of marketing.…

First time was because of fire, this time it was the ice…

I just spent 3 days in my neighborhood, AND the 3 surrounding towns without power. Well, WE had power, our little sky castle, but everyone else (of those on grid power) were without power. On Sunday afternoon, we were in our second or third day of freezing fog and drizzle, most people had gone into town and stocked up on supplies, mostly food and water type stuff. I was at the grocery store myself to stock up on supplies for the week because of family coming out for the week of Thanksgiving.

I was somewhat surprised at the number of people in the store the week before Thanksgiving, I expected to see it that busy later on in the week, then I remembered we were in for a few days of freezing weather, fog and sleet. I noticed several shelves that were cleaned out, fully cleaned out of whatever had been there, it made me think of the way people will clear out a store when things are going wrong.…

Third Industrial Revolution

The first industrial revolution in the 19th Century was the invention of the steam engine. In the 20th Century oil and gas played a large role, and the US invented the telephone and television.

Electrical supplies became centralised.

“Now we are at the crossroads of a Third Industrial Revolution” – said Jeremy Rifkin, 68, economist and eco-guru, whose book The Third Industrial Revolution: How Lateral Power Is Transforming Energy, the Economy, and the World
is a best seller, in interview with Handelsblatt on November 19.

Jeremy Rifkin characterised the Third Revolution as one of sustainable development for a good quality of life. He said the US was a pioneer in the first half of the third industrial revolution – the Internet.

“Then the US stopped – they have even gone backwards, using fossil fuels such as shale gas”.…

Let us film you and we will help find you an off-grid home

We are looking for people who have the skills and the resources and want to make the move from their existing lives inside mainstream society, leave their jobs and their mortgages and their high-spending consumer habits, and move to a low-stress, low-consumption life off the grid.

Of course there will still be a need for at least some to work and make money, still a need to generate power, wash, cook, have shelter. But we want to show the world all these things are possible in total comfort, with no stress, off the grid, if you arrange yourself cleverly.

There are many reasons why I have been trying to make a film or a web series about people who are making the move to live off-grid. The first is that the masses of material on TV at the moment never seems to reflect real people and their real lives.…

Bye-bye Lulu

Lou Reed was known as Lulu to his friends. It was his gay name, given to him by Andy Warhol.

He went off the grid in 2010, when he learned he was dying.

He started producing ghostly photos – anticipating his future.
