“The Gleaners and I” by Agnes Varda

Agnes Varda
Agnes Varda – Filming is like Gleaning

For her documentary, “The Gleaners and I,” French documentary Director Agnes Varda turned her mini DV-camera on an old practice — foraging for wheat left after the harvest — to create a portrait of modern day “gleaners,” those hungry people who live on the leftovers the rest of us have discarded, and those, like herself, who create art of the images and materials they collect. Andrea Meyer speaks with the legendary director about connecting with her audience, intuition, editing and cine-writing. The interview was first published on https://www.indiewire.com/

indieWIRE: Gleaning is such an unusual subject. I wonder what drew you to it as the topic for a documentary.

Agn’s Varda: Gleaning itself is not known — is forgotten. The word is pass. So I was intrigued, by these people in the street picking food. And then I thought, what’s happening to the fields of wheat? Nothing is left in the fields of wheat. So I went to the potatoes, and I found these heart-shaped potatoes, and it made me feel good. Made me feel that I was on the right track.

“Filming, especially a documentary, is gleaning. Because you pick what you find; you bend; you go around; you are curious; you try to find out where are things. But, you cannot push the analogy further, because we don’t just film the leftovers.”

Live cheap
Live cheap…live well

Here are 101 money-saving ideas for the truly frugal, with thanks to the web site www.allthingsfrugal.com.

The list covers every aspect of life — from Beauty and Shopping to Work and Travel:

Energy

*Lower your thermostat temperature a couple of degrees and wear sweaters around your house. For every degree you lower your thermostat, you save 2-3 percent on your energy bill.

*When you use your dishwasher, stop it before the drying cycle, and open the door to air dry your dishes.

*Make sure all your appliances are running smoothly by cleaning the filters regularly.

*Unless you are baking, put your food in your oven when you first turn it on.

*Close your drapes at night to help cold air from getting in.

*Open your drapes wide when the sun is shining to warm your room.

*Keep your windows shut as tightly as possible. Locking them will make the seal tighter.

*Close doors to rooms that don’t need to be heated, like closets, storage rooms, etc. Close the heating vent in unused rooms.

*Turn you lights off when you leave a room. It is cheaper to turn them on and off than leave them on, and the bulbs last longer.

*Use the lowest wattage possible and still have adequate light.

South Face
Not the North Face

There are a hundreds of traders selling fake North Face outdoor gear on E-bay. They will return the money if you send back the goods, as they want to keep trading. But the danger of buying bargain outdoor gear via the net is that you end up stranded in the dark up a mountain, shivering your arse off (note to UK readers North Face is high fashion, high cost outdoor gear- much loved in the USA) .

DIY Carbon offset
We are all carbon neutral now

Marketing firms are cashing in on public concern about the environment to sell PR services rather than solutions.

They claim to be able to create offset projects such as woodlands to absorb all the harmful carbon dioxide emitted by individuals, firms, or meetings. One example of this worrying trend is the UK-based Future Forests, which sells a so-called patented carbon-neutral label to clients. Unlike companies such as EcoSecurities, Future Forests concentrates less on helping its customers cope with new climate-related legislation than on helping them advertise themselves to the public as climatically responsible.

Planting tress is no substitute for using renewable energy. The answer, if you want to plant trees is to plant your own , in a window box, a back yard, or your best friend’s garden. You do NOT need others to do it for you. Future Forests appears to be planting less trees than it promises and takes a large cut from payments made by individuals who can scarcely afford the sky high prices they charge.…

Giving is not just for Christmas

keep on giving
Beal – giving is “cathartic”

RECYCLING is part of the post-consumerism we advocate at Off-grid. But FREE CYCLING goes one better.
Freecycle founder Deron Beal calls it the worldwide gift economy.
At freecycle.org members give away things they would otherwise throw away. They also post want ads on their 1277 local web sites around the world. The (local) recipient collects – for free. The energy spent on transport is far outweighed by the energy saved in avoiding bringing one more item into a crowded world.…
