Off-grid aid project blasted

Amboanga City – Two people were killed and 21 injured yesterday when suspected terrorists detonated a bomb outside a USAID project office near an air base in the southern Philippines, officials said.

The explosion occurred shortly before 10 a.m. at the ground floor of the Air Materiel Wing Savings and Loan Association, Inc. building, also partly rented by the office of congress-woman Maria Isabelle G. Climaco, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Alliance for Mindanao Off-grid Renewable Energy.

The blast, just in front of Gate 1 of the Philippine Air Force’s Edwin Andrews Airbase, sent debris and shattered glass to nearby establishments.

Witnesses said the ground shook and parts of the building’s ceiling collapsed. The iron gate of the building was also ripped to pieces.

Sr. Supt. Lurimer Detran, acting police chief, said an initial post- blast examination showed that the improvised explosive may have been planted in one of several bags of civilian commuters lining up to ride a military C-130 cargo flight.

American bomb experts, who examined the blast site, noted that the explosive had TNT.

Many of the victims were chance passengers of the military’s cargo plane. “They usually stay outside the air base, where they wait for boarding,” Mr. Detran said.

Four workers of the US-funded electrification project and two members of Ms. Climaco’s staff were wounded, but were later declared out of danger.

“This is a terrible incident. Our thoughts go out to the injured and their families,” US Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney said in a statement issued by the embassy in Manila.

“We hope those who did this will be brought to justice,” she added.

US embassy officials would not say if they thought the USAID project was specifically targeted.

City social welfare and development officer Francisco L. Barredo said the local government will shoulder medical and burial expenses.

Within minutes of the blast, police began setting checkpoints along the city’s major roads.

Western Mindanao police regional officer Col. Jose Gucela said three men are now under custody, and are being investigated for their supposed involvement in the blast.

“A witness had seen retired Police Officer 2 Abdurazul Aji Saban jump onboard a white van near the site, right after the blast,” he told reporters.

The van was flagged down 16 kilometers west of the explosion site an hour after the bombing, the regional police official said.

The bombing occurred as candidates in the Muslim region’s Aug. 11 elections were in the city to file their candidacies.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, accompanied by the ambassadors of Malaysia, Libya, and Saudi Arabia, was in nearby Tawi-Tawi during the incident distributing cash to teachers and inaugurating several projects, said the Philippine Information Agency.

Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog said the bombing was not intended to sabotage Mrs. Arroyo’s trip to Tawi-Tawi, noting that the President was not scheduled to land in Zamboanga.…

DIY Water Filter / Purifier

Well, a very nice reader left a comment on my blog, he gave me a website that has a water filter/purifier that can be made at home it’ s easy, no difficult instructions, no impossible parts to purchase, it is a very simple system using only 4 parts, yes, 4 parts! I’ll post the instructions here, and I’ll give the link to the site where you can get the PDF download, I highly recommend it!

https://pottersforpeace.org/wp-content/uploads/ide-filter-user-guide.pdf

I love my Berkey water purifier, and if I had it to do over again today, I would still buy it, but I do plan on using one (or more!) of these homemade water filters too.

RABBIT WATER PURIFIER

By carefully following these instructions you will be able to

· Drink clear, safe, good-tasting water,
· Improve your family’s health,
· Reduce expenses, and
· Save time.

1. Parts of the Filter
1-6490597
(added by Wretha-I assume they are talking about an unglazed ceramic pot, glazed pots are water proof and the water would not flow through)

2. Take Care to Avoid Cracks

2-9932293Handle the ceramic pot carefully to avoid breakage or cracking. Small invisible cracks may allow microorganisms to pass through the filter, making the water unsafe to drink.
If a ceramic pot full of water takes less than 3 hours to empty, the flow rate is too fast and the ceramic pot should be replaced.

3. Before Using the Filter for the First Time

Soak the ceramic pot in clear water (rain or tubewell water) for 12 hours
3-7075866
OR

Fill the ceramic pot three times, allow the water to seep through, and discard the filtered water.
4-2515277
Doing one of the above two steps will flush the clay smell and color from the ceramic pot. You only need to do one of the above steps, it is not necessary to do both.

Lastly, clean the receptacle tank and spigot with soapy water. DO NOT use soap to clean the ceramic vessel.
5-5501894

4. Daily Use

Put the filter in a safe place where it will not get knocked over and secure it to the wall or a post.
6-3355875

If the water source is very dirty, tie a piece of cloth over the top of the filter to strain out the dirt and debris.
7-4492889

The filter will flow faster when the ceramic pot is full, so fill it often.
8-7796832

Keep the lid closed to prevent dust and mosquitoes from entering.
9-9297207

5. Cleaning the Filter

The ceramic pot should be cleaned once per month or when the flow rate begins to slow down.

– Clean the inside surface of the lid with soapy water and let it dry.
Place the lid on a level surface with the clean side facing up.
10-2098374

– Carefully lift the ceramic pot out of the receptacle and set it on the lid. Touch only the rim when lifting the ceramic pot.…

Thanks Chris, it is some wide open spaces, until you get into the mountains… the fox is a wonder to watch, we just fed it some old bread, we were sitting out on our deck and heard it walking around in the dark, got out the flashlight and saw him, he came running when he heard the bread wrapper. :) Well trained and well fed critter!

How is the turbine coming from the drill? Have you done some more tests using it? How did Bob wire it. I have a old cordless drill I want to test with, but I don’t know where to begin.

Beautiful. I’ve been eyeballin’ some of that Pecos land for sale, I dunno. I love the isolation out your way, but you can’t grow much by way of crops I reckon. Keep the pics coming, maybe I’ll come around!

Hi Hollis

We haven’t done any more with the drill, I don’t know anything about the workings of it, I’ll ask my hubby to about it and write it down in my blog. I’ll try to do it asap.

Hi Mayberry,

Yes, it is beautiful, at least it is to me, I love the desert and the mountains, I get the best of both! I am growing a garden, so far everything has been growing OK, though right now everything is still pretty small, our soil is great, but you don’t have to go far to hit hard packed horrible soil, so if you are looking at a piece of land, I would recommend taking a post hole digger and checking out the soil. The only problem I might have is the altitude, I heard that okra will not grow very well up here, I just received my order of okra seeds, I’ll find out soon if that’s true. The only other thing that might be an issue is water, as long as you have enough water, and enough mulch, and a way to protect it from the hungry critters, you should be able to grow crops for food.

If You Can’t Be Off-Grid Then Live In A SmartGridCity

What is a Smart Grid City? It’s a new concept that is being built in Boulder, Colorado to make using conventional grid energy more efficient in it’s use and cost. it is probably best put by the chairman, president and CEO of Xcel Energy, Dick Kelly:

  • “We’re on our way toward building the grid of the future and making SmartGridCity a reality. This is a forward-thinking project that will transform the way we do business. In SmartGridCity, our customers will have more information, including the tools to communicate directly with us, and will choose when and how they use their energy based on price, generating resource or convenience.”

The design phase completion was announced on May 15, 2008 and that the equipment needed has been ordered and construction has already started. Since the study done by the Smart Grid Consortium and Xcel Energy to develop a scope and design to implement this change was just completed this past April. To say this is on the fast track seems to be an understatement. Though as we American’s have shown time and time again when we are fired up bu something we can do it at an extremely efficient rate. If this planned project goes as well as expected then by December 2009 the city of Boulder will be adding renewable energy to it’s power sources as well as integrating plug-in hybrid cars for it’s citizens.

The idea to use the technology we have as well and push the envelope to lower consumption of the energy we have available on the grid is a great step to helping people become more involved in their energy choices. If everyone had the information about what the cost of plugging something in or turning it on would cost in both energy and cash then questioning the need for it could become second nature to everyone. How many times do people turn on lights in the middle of the day because shades haven’t been opened yet, or charging a mobile device when it’s not empty or longer then needed, or left lights on because they would be right back, or any of hundreds of little things that because we don’t see the cost at time of use we don’t always think about it.

Hoping for this to be a success for more then the city of Boulder should be anyones hope that wishes to change the way we treat energy. If a city can be taught to conserve and use wisely as a whole then us that are working towards that on our own can benefit, too. The technology to do this will be improved, price should become more realistic for the common person, and more information about problems and solutions will be available. Of course, that’s a best case scenerio and here at The Off-Grid Home that is what we all hope for.
