LEED Takes An Important Step

LEED®, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating Systems™, has taken the important step of creating a third party certification that is a separate entity.

The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) has been established as a separately incorporated entity and is supported by U.S. Green Building Council. GBCI will be administering the credentialing programs related to green building. These practices must use applications of proven strategies for increasing and measuring the performance of buildings and communities as defined by industry systems, such as LEED.

The U.S. Green Building Council will still handle the development of the LEED Rating System and offer LEED-based education programs. Now the LEED Professional Accreditation program is independently administered under the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) to allow for balanced, objective management of the credential. GBCI will manage all the aspects of LEED Professional Accreditation program including the exam development, registration, and delivery. With this separation into two organizations it brings the credentialing program closer toward meeting the standard for program excellence put forth by the American National Standards Institute.

GBCI is still a new entity and has just begun to operate as a separate entity, this being said it already has helpful information for us the layman as well. You can visit GBCI and findLEED Aproved Professionals to help you in whatever stage you find yourself in. You are able to search their directory by name, area, area of practice and affiliation. That means that you can also check the accreditation of ones you may already have dealings with.

Being able to check accreditations easily is an important thing for those of us looking to find professionals who understand how we wish to remodel, improve, or build our homes.…

Catching the Wind With MARS

Did you ever wish that you could catch the wind, not near the ground but the almost constant wind 600 ft above the ground. That is what MARS or Magenn Air Rotor System is designed to go. It is an innovative system to harness the power of the wind that is scheduled to begin production in 2008.

The inflatable structure is enclosed with natural stability and integrity that will rotate on it’s horizontal axis. This buoyant system, using the inert gas helium, will only require a tension cable to secure it and at the same time transfer the energy to the ground. Where a transformer can either transfer the electrical energy to the grid or your home. MARS is projected to be more cost efficient then other wind energy systems, with a $3 to $5 per watt range. With a 40% to 50% efficiency rate, almost doubling the conventional wind designs.

Since the system is on a tether and aloft it can easily be moved to catch the best winds and/or placed near more populated areas. This ability to be moved at will can also be important for when extreme weather or disasters strike. Either to be moved to help or out of the way of danger.

Though the system has been slower to come to market then originally planned, we think it may be worth they wait. The first system to be available will be a 10kw version and slated to follow is the 4kw version. They are hoping to have both in production by the end of 2008.…

Clean Energy Alternative

If you can’t afford the up front cost of going off the grid how about turning to clean energy resources for your energy needs now.

The up front cost of going self-sufficient may be to much and with most tax and rebate incentives expiring, the help that was there is disappearing fast, using mass produced alternative energy may be the way to go for you.

You can go to the US Dept of Energy to find the alternative energy sources available to you. Being self-sufficient will be great when it can be achieved by all of us who want it, but with the roadblocks we face to do that at least we can feel better about the energy we consume while trying to attain this goal.

Another benefit could also be as more demand for these types of energy sources become more in demand then price should fall. Hence the $1 per watt solar panels that are due to be in production soon. So you can look at the use of these energies as an investment for bringing down the cost for you later. Since there can be no quick and easy method to changing your lifestyle or the world we live in we hope that by more and more of us, together or separately, changing the effect on and in our environments will be felt and seen.

Changing ourselves is truly the only sure way of making the world a better place for us and our children. Good luck and borrowing from the Iroquois the belief “In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.” We do admit that we found this quote on one of our favorite brands of non-toxic household supplies Seventh Generation.…
