Mother’s Day

This was sent to me by my hubby’s ex wife, it was sent to her by her daughter, it is very sweet. My hubby’s ex wife is a very nice lady (she has been a big help and we appreciate it very much!), she also has a son in military boot camp, so the 8th one down has special meaning to both of us… it brought a tear to my eye, it really struck home. Thanks Cheri, for sending this to me. :)

This is for all the moms and all the moms to be.

House Of Straw

In one of my Yahoo groups, this link was posted

https://houseofstraw.com/index.htm

Wow, this lady sure has taste, I really love her house and style. Check it out. Her house is very elegant yet down to earth, I have seen lots of straw bale houses, and this is my favorite by far. I love the spiral staircase, this house is really a work of art.

I agree — that was really neat. Amazing what can be done largely with your own hands.

You certainly have your own kind of adventure underway. I’m not entirely sure how I found your blog, but it’s been an enjoyable visit for me. Best of luck with your off-the-grid lifestyle

Get Green on Demand

The new programs, shows and movies that are all about green have been mentioned a few times here at The Off-Grid Home. Though the times for these can have scheduling conflicts and as most channels now carrying a green/self-sufficient themed programming have it all together about once a week, That can be a plus if you can spend every night in front of the TV to catch it all, but not very practical for most of us. So seeing that the Discovery network has but their new Planet Green on demand is great for letting you catch all the new shows. Sundance also has at least one movie/documentary dealing with self-sustainability, green, and/or the environment for when you have more time to watch. These programs are a great source for learning about new products available, different building techniques, other sources of information, organizations that can help, etc. Even those of us who have our ears to the ground and eyes to the horizon on the eco-friendly and self-sustainable movements can benefit as innovation is the driving force behind it.

To see this programming becoming more accessible to the average American is great, though we do worry about it becoming the next fad of the networks. Some shows are modeled after already popular shows. Greenovate is modeled after Flip That House but with only green renovations for the flip. That can be great or it can be a sign that the networks don’t quite get what being self-sufficient and/or green is really about. There is hope that this is a way for those who don’t understand the movement or have an interest but don’t know where to start to get their feet wet. For the time being we’re opting for the hope scenario and will do everything possible to encourage that direction.…

Things are Growing!

Stuff is growing! Woo-Hoo! I have been watering my garden each day for short periods of time, it’s been a few days since I planted, maybe close to a week, anyhoo, I carefully pulled the straw back and I found plants growing under it. I am so excited, the seedlings are less than a half inch long and do not have true leaves yet, but they are sprouting.

We have a new neighbor, we saw him (or her) a few days ago down by the creek, just below our garden, it’s a jackrabbit, I am afraid he has been attracted by the smell of the wet straw, we spent today working on the fence around the garden, Bob finished the door, I hope it’s enough to keep everyone out. :)…

Very Special News

I just got some great news today, I found out I’m going to be a grandmother, for the first time. :) When I got the phone call today, I was speechless, I had to try really REALLY hard not to cry (in joy), I’m not like the actresses you see in the movies who can carry on a conversation while bawling, I can’t talk a lick, so I controlled it and let it sink in.

My son just graduated from Army boot camp and he is training to be a combat engineer, something to do with explosives, his wife lives with my dad (their grandfather) while he is away. He should be back in plenty of time for the baby. My son wants to have a girl, my DIL wants to have a boy, I think it’s going to be a girl, don’t know why, I just do.

I’ll post updates as I get them. Does that mean I’m officially old??? (grin) Or does that distinction go to my Dad? This will be his 5th GREAT grandchild! He could live to see great-great grandchildren, he has great grandchildren old enough to procreate, and he is in good enough health to be here for them.

Tweaked & Where Should You Live

I tweaked the colors a bit, mainly to make the text more readable, more contrast and such… I hope it is better for everyone. :)

Hmmm, not much going on, here’s something fun to do, take this test and see where you should live, I took it and it said I should live in the country::

Where Should You Live?

I Should Live in the Country
country-2616578

You are laid back, calm, and good at entertaining yourself.

You don’t need an expensive big city to keep you busy.

You’ll take the peaceful life over the stressful life any day of the week.

Post a comment and let me know where you should live. :)

Yeah, my goal (wish) is to unload this house ASAP, get a travel trailer, save up some money for some land in the country, and set up a homestead (retreat, whatever). I’d like to have this done in 3 years or less.

Magic Jack and Garden Updates

Magic Jack

So far so good on the Magic Jack, I did have a problem with it though, it seemed that I could not call the 2 main people I wanted to call, my Dad and sister. For some reason it would not complete calls to local numbers (in the 817 area code for me), I discovered this is a known issue according to an unofficial forum for the Magic Jack. When I would try to call my Dad or sister, it would ring 5-8 times then I would hear a fast busy signal then a dial tone. I could call any other numbers outside the 817 area code, I could also call any cell phone (didn’t matter what area code). So I decided to contact MJ’s customer service, it’s all on line, I contacted a very nice cs person, I told him what the problem was and that I had already tried using the upgrade on their website (multiple times) and tried every USB port on my computer. I was afraid he would try to get me to do the upgrade again or make me go through some useless processes, I know the problem is on their end since the MJ works for other calls. He was very polite, asked me a few questions, got 3 phone numbers that will not work for me, then he said I would be getting an email in the next 24-48 hours about this matter. After that I went to the unofficial MJ forum, I posted a message about this to their tech section, I copied and pasted the transcript of the customer service contact, I asked if anyone else there had this problem and found a fix or a workaround.

I quickly received a reply from one of the members, he suggested using this format when I called, instead of calling 817284****, to call *678*17284****, IT WORKED! I was able to call my Dad directly, then I called my brother in law, I didn’t try my sister’s number, but I have no doubt it will work with her number too.

So even if MJ doesn’t have a fix, I have a workaround so I am happy. It seems that the * codes (*67 and such) do not work on MJ’s system, at least not the way they work on regular phones. I don’t care, as long as I can call who I want. :)

Garden

Woohoo! I got my garden planted yesterday! I took my packets of seeds and started on one corner, I walked around and dropped the entire packets on the spaces where I wanted to plant them, then I took each packet and planted the seeds. I got them all planted and watered. I can’t wait to see the little sprouts peeking up from the straw mulch, patients! Here is a list of what I have planted so …

Got my Magic Jack

Got my Magic Jack today, it’s been in the mailbox for a couple of days, but since it’s a 12+ mile round trip on a rocky, dusty, dirt, washboard, up and down, in and out road, I don’t get out there very often.

I hooked up the MJ and it installed fairly easily, there was the smallest of hiccups a couple of times, once was because my internet stalling out for a few seconds… anyhoo I got it running and started making phone calls, it works pretty well, one problem it has it for some reason it refuses to call certain numbers, it will ring and ring then I get a busy signal then a dial tone, I have found that when it is giving me trouble, if I call using the software instead of dialing the phone, it works a bit better. I am still testing it out, the sound quality is better than my cell phone.

For anyone who has my cell phone number and needs my new number, just email me and I’ll give it to you.

Check out the poll on the blog, the upper right corner, complete the poll for me if you want to, thanks! :)…
