Would you live in a yurt?

yurt01
In the next town over from where I live, quite close, nearly in town, there is a yurt on a hillside, I don’t know who owns it or if anyone even lives there, but it looks interesting, if nothing else because it’s different.

A yurt is a semi-permanent tent structure, round, with a slightly cone shaped dome top. They are usually made of canvas, are roomy but there is only one room inside, unless you add some sort of walls inside to divide up the spaces like they did in the second video below. They are usually insulated so you can live in them year round. I wonder how long the canvas holds up though, and the plastic sheeting windows, I suspect at some point the covering would need to be replaced.

Never the less, they look quite interesting and would make a fun living place. Have you even stayed in a yurt? If so, let me know what you think of them below.

Here are 3 videos showcasing yurt life, enjoy.

The yurt platform and stove/pipe are not included in our service. A list of materials,
platform diagram, and pipe/stack dimensions are provided. We send a Setup Manual with
the yurt and offer phone support (soon to add a video). The yurt platform (sub-floor), not
just deck, should be factored into the decision when budgeting your overall yurt cost, as it
can be as low as a few hundred dollars, or as high as a few thousand dollars, based on the
size of the yurt, materials, and builder(s). We can refer service as you need it.
There are a variety of custom design options and an array of colors to choose from!

  2. Absolutely! A yurt is the most efficient shape for heating/cooling, easily divided into living areas, easily moved when you want it to… an ideal living structure! Especially in the warmer climates where insulation is less of an issue, though there are plenty of great winter options on the market too. I just wish the North American companies would take note from their European counterparts and come down in prices.. 16.000$ for a “basic” 12 foot diameter yurt is a bit much compared to 3500 EUR (quoting a portuegese company).
