San Diego Permaculture and the Sky Mountain Institute will host the 2013 San Diego Permaculture Convergence, Nov. 9-10, aimed at showing how to harvest rainwater using simple structures.
The event will feature talks and hands-on demonstrations about rainwater and gray-water harvesting, aquaponics, building a chicken coop, organic gardening, urban goat-keeping, rocket stoves, growing shiitake mushrooms on oak logs and creating “food forests.”
Early bird tickets for the first 50 participants cost $75; later registrants would pay $85 to $100. Children’s tickets cost $10.

The San Diego County Water Authority recently released its free digital flipbook to enhance water-use efficiency. Titled “eGuide to a WaterSmart Lifestyle,” it offers a guide to water-efficient choices for homes and gardens. It includes illustrations of lush, low-water gardens and tips on household appliance choices.
Interactive features allow users to share ideas on Facebook, electronically “pin” plant and garden photos on their account, watch videos and scroll through features including plant finders, interactive maps, animated graphics, home and garden calculators, landscape design tools and details about rebates and incentives.
People who sign up for the flipbook by Nov. 30 will be entered into a drawing for a free rain barrel.
