    Welcome Michelle,

I am not in AZ so I can’t give you advice about that, there may be someone else here who can better answer that for you… please keep us updated on your progress though :)

    Hi Lonnie,

I think we need more information about your wishes before anyone can give you advice or ideas…. are you wanting to put solar panels on a conventional house? Are you looking for more rural acreage? What are your thoughts about that? You mention wanting to do things legally, I think most people going off grid do things in a legal manner, you will have to do some research where you live (or want to live) and learn what you can and can’t do. Typically the more rural you are, the farther you are from town, the more lenient the codes and laws tend to be about what you can and can’t do.

    Hi Kyle,

Sorry for the late reply, been away for a bit, but now I’m catching up

You sound like someone who could really make a good go at living off grid, I don’t know how your finances are but you seem to have some skills, I would suggest getting your own property, as you have discovered, relying on someone else can be problematic, if your name is on the title, then it’s yours and you don’t have to worry about things falling apart.

If you don’t have the money now, perhaps you could work toward getting some funds, work work work, save save save and be on the lookout for the kind of place you wish to live. There is a lot to consider, what kind of place are you looking for? The properties with “issues” are cheaper to get, my property had access issues, it turned out to be a good thing for us and made the property really inexpensive to get.

Can’t wait to hear what else you have lined up :)

Try breaking it up into several smaller posts, make a post then reply to the same post, or try writing a paragraph-post it-then edit it to add more… I checked and don’t see it in drafts or pending…

Camping on your land BEFORE you build is a great idea, you can’t tell how things work out until you have been there, preferably for 4 full seasons, when we first moved to our off grid place, we were surprised at the winds, specifically the direction it blew, where I came from, summer the wind blew from the south, winter the wind blew from the north, now where I live, it’s completely different, we get mostly westerly winds, and occasionally it blows from the east (usually indicating a change in the weather). Fortunately it didn’t affect how we built our place, but things like water run off during heavy rains and such do make a difference as to where you will want to build.

Congrats badger1972! That is always a great feeling, are you going to have internet access there? What are your plans?
