Museum showcases tiny house designs

Go large! Only $37,000

The Toledo Museum is celebrating the trend towards smaller homes in new exhibit Small Worlds. Everyone with internet access can participate in learning more about small homes and they can participate in an eBay auction for charity to March 25th, 2012.

“The intricate, intriguing works in Small Worlds explore the realms of the home, the studio, the neighborhood, the city, and the natural world,” said Amy Gilman, curator of contemporary art, associate director of the Museum and organizer the exhibition.

The museum decided to auction a Tumbleweed XS-House which is part of the exhibit, on eBay to raise funds for their early childhood art education program which serves over 60,000 school children in the Ohio and Michigan area each year.

At 65 square feet, the house up for auction is the smallest plan available from the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company. The house is the ideal off-grid starter-home.  It sits on a custom 7×10 ft. heavy duty trailer that comes with the home. It also has been furnished by build partner The Andersons and all furnishings sell with the home including a mini fridge. The home includes a sleeping loft with queen size mattress, a functional bathroom with shower, a kitchenette, and a living area. The Tumbleweed Tiny House Company estimates that the price of its XS model fully constructed is $38,997.

This home has RV style hookups for water and electrical but does not have an attached sewer tank. Bathroom would need to be hooked up to an exterior sewer system or have a sewer storage tank added. Outdoor access steps and a ball hitch are included.

Greens or Survivalists who would like to own a tiny house may place a bid and become part of the first tiny house auction on eBay.

  1. I love the idea of tiny houses, but since when does a shed cost $37,000.00? These kinds of outrageous prices, including $1,000.00 for plans for a shed, defeat the purpose of micro-off-grid living. There’s just no excuse or reason for such prices. A shed of this size would cost about $1,500.00 (fifteen hundred dollars) and you add shelves, minfridge, gas burner stove and loft bed. It’s ridiculous and should not be promoted in this way. Make something reasonable and useful for people; not just another “green” kind of scam.
