Hi this is Nick, and I hope you enjoy these extract which we’ll be posting up over the next few weeks and months. Eventually I’ll be putting the whole book up online, but it will take a while, probably not worth waiting when you can buy it(see below), but for those who don’t believe in bookshops, or intellectual property, well — keep on coming back.
The extracts are published in the order in which they appear in the book, so you won’t get to the nitty-gritty of my journey around the UK off-grid community just yet.
The FIRST extract relates to how I personally got into this off-grid way of life – by accident of course – as is the way with all the best things that happen to us: You can read it here
The SECOND extract is about the way the grid developed in the UK – it was different everywhere – and how the planning system started. You can find it here
The THIRD extract is about my decision to buy a camper van (RV to you Americans). You can find it here.
The FOURTH extract deals with the technicalities of choosing the right van for your off-grid travels. In the end I chose the wrong van – but I wasn’t to know that at the time, and you will learn from my mistakes. You can find it here.
The FIFTH extract finds me well into the tour of British of-gridders, visiting a commune in Devon which is under siege from angry grid-connected, millionaire property-owners. You can find it here.
The SIXTH extract finds me returning to my roots, in North London where dozens are living on boats unofficially moored in a parkside canal. You can find it here.

Looking fwd to updates
Nick, Do you know of anyone living off the grid in Washington State?
Nick, I read your book some time ago but checking it out again found this site. I thought what a pity it was not to have an index. Several times I wanted to check back and sort of remembered what it was about. This kind of book is crying out for one.
Thanks Nick – I would have liked an index but was pleased with the way the chapter titles are really comprehensive and clearly signpost to the contents, names and types of person being interviewed or subject matter of chapters
Hello. I am looking to get in touch with some people who live out of their cars or vans. Wondering if you are still in touch with some of the people you wrote about and/or on videos? Many Thanks.
Hi Nick, I can’t wait to read your book.
Keep up the great work.
Just a comment….why no index? This is the kind of book that needs one. I got towards the end and needed to track down earlier mentions of Land Matters, and thumbed to the back to find nothing there [good list of references though].
Have you looked at all the planning changes (i am sure you have) on live work units I have been interested in this aspect for a few years now as they dont seem to fit into any single use ie , b1 or c3 but some councils seem helpful, if you think about it years ago people did live over their buisness’s . To stert with it was encouraged in bigger cities ie London but has spread to lots of towns now but the recent changes seem to be encouraging rural as well if it sustainable having said all that its still not easy.

Nick: I recently saw the presentation that you made at Mondo Energy. I wrote about it on my blog at https://atomicinsights.blogspot.com/2010/01/do-we-need-smart-grid-strong-grid-or.html
I love the idea of miniature nuclear power systems.
