Service charges for off-grid buildings

Self-sufficient for water

SEATTLE (AP) – Why should off-gridders pay the same rate for County services as those who are on the grid?

King County in Washington State is figuring out whether buildings that go off the grid must still pay for the regional wastewater system they don’t use.
The Bullitt Foundation has proposed a building in the Capitol Hill neighborhood that would collect, treat and reuse all the water on site.
The county currently requires such innovative projects to be hooked up to the county system.
The Daily Journal of Commerce reports some developers have asked the county to waive or reduce the monthly charges for wastewater services they don’t use.
The county has said it worries the burden for infrastructure costs would unfairly fall to others in the system. But some say to refuse the request may discourage innovative technologies.

  1. That is not fair that off-the-gridders who do not use the wastewater system should have to pay for it. “The county has said it worries the burden for infrastructure costs would unfairly fall to others in the system.” So people who don’t use it should have to shoulder that burden? Not fair at all!
