Total Luxury with no Utilities

Zanzibar, Tanzania new hotelA luxury hotel with no mains utilities is being built on the island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania.

The Uzuri Hotel Resort, anticipated to open in early 2016, will be a village resort including 60 individual cabanas and five larger villas, together with restaurants, bars, yoga, meditation spaces and massage cabanas.

The cabanas will make use of shade and sea breeze to help create a natural ventilation system within the hotel interiors. Rain water will be harvested and two wells will be built on site to pump salty water into a desalination plant, supplying clean, fresh water to the whole resort.

Delivery Van to RV for £6000

This leads down to a wood burner in the former window-glazing truck, which a pair of university graduates have converted into an RV.

Stuart Humphreys, 24, and Claire Bragg, 25, from Leeds spent just over £6,000 and two years transforming their second-hand van into what will be their home while they travel around Europe.

UK industry weaning itself from the grid

British business lobby group Confederation of British Industry says UK manufacturers are looking to generate their own power to sidestep fears of rising energy prices and threats to supply security.

Nicola Walker, director of business environment at the CBI said more and more firms are going off-grid, especially in energy intensive industries.

A CBI survey showed over half of businesses believed the UK’s energy security has declined over the past five years, reflecting a 2013 report by Ofgem that showed capacity margins would be at a historic low next winter.
